What is DDR3 RAM

DDR3, short for Double Data Rate Three, is a type of DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) released in June 2007 to replace DDR2. DDR3 chips have bus clock speeds from 400MHz to 1066MHz, range in size from 1GB to 24GB and consume almost 30% less power than their predecessors. DDR3 RAM for a desktop computer has 240 pins. On a laptop, DDR3 RAM has 204 pins.

These memory chips can only be installed on a motherboard that supports DDR3 memory and not DDR2 memory slots.
